Inpatient Coding Specialist III (REMOTE)

Job Description

Networks Connect is seeking a highly experienced Inpatient Coding Specialist III to join our dynamic team. This role is responsible for reviewing and accurately coding inpatient medical records in compliance with the latest ICD-10 CM/PCS guidelines and regulatory requirements. The IP Coding Specialist III is recognized as a subject matter expert due to their extensive education, training, and experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assign accurate ICD-10 CM/PCS codes for inpatient accounts, ensuring compliance with official coding guidelines and conventions.
  • Identify admission diagnoses, principal diagnoses, procedures, and all secondary diagnoses to determine DRG assignments, CC/MCCs, POA status, severity of illness, and risk of mortality.
  • Abstract essential data elements such as discharge disposition, procedure dates, and physician information.
  • Conduct physician queries to obtain further documentation clarification when needed.
  • Identify and escalate cases with missing or incomplete documentation.
  • Maintain high-quality coding standards and adhere to productivity benchmarks.
  • Provide mentorship and training on specialized coding service lines when requested.
  • Stay up to date on coding guidelines, regulatory changes, and industry best practices.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Education: Bachelor’s or Associate Degree in Health Information Management (HIM) or a closely related field (preferred).
  • Experience: 3-5 years of acute academic hospital-based inpatient coding experience. Equivalent education and experience combinations may be considered.
  • Certifications (One or More Required):
    • Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)
    • Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)
    • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) – AHIMA
    • Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC) – AAPC
  • Technical Skills:
    • Proficiency in 3M 360, Epic, and electronic health record (EHR) systems (preferred).
    • Advanced computer skills and medical coding software experience.
