Outpatient Coder II
Job Description
We are seeking an experienced Outpatient Coder II to join a growing healthcare coding team in a fully remote capacity. This role is responsible for reviewing and accurately coding complex outpatient encounters while ensuring compliance with ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS, and regulatory guidelines.
The ideal candidate will possess strong technical coding expertise, advanced knowledge of outpatient reimbursement methodologies, and experience coding a variety of high-acuity outpatient services including observation stays, same-day surgery, surgery center cases, and outpatient-in-a-bed encounters.

Duties
- Review and accurately assign ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes for complex outpatient encounters
- Analyze medical records thoroughly using clinical knowledge of anatomy, physiology, disease processes, pharmacology, and medical terminology
- Ensure compliance with official coding guidelines, Coding Clinic guidance, CPT Assistant standards, and payer regulations
- Resolve NCCI edits using approved facility modifiers
- Submit physician queries when documentation clarification is needed
- Utilize encoder and computer-assisted coding (CAC) tools to support coding accuracy and efficiency
- Identify opportunities for workflow and system improvements related to coding processes and software functionality
- Maintain established productivity and quality standards
- Communicate coding rationale and audit findings when necessary
- Collaborate with clinical, revenue cycle, and operational teams to resolve coding-related issues
Requirements
- Minimum 3 years of coding experience in an acute care healthcare setting
- Strong knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS Level I & II, and outpatient reimbursement methodologies
- Experience coding complex outpatient encounters including surgery and observation services
- Knowledge of NCCI edits and facility modifiers
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field
- 4+ years of outpatient coding experience in an acute care setting
- Experience utilizing 3M Encoder and CAC technologies
