Inpatient Coding Specialist III | Acute Care Coding Expert

Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Inpatient Coding Specialist III to review and code acute care inpatient medical records in a fully remote work environment. This role serves as a subject matter expert (SME) in inpatient coding and requires advanced knowledge of ICD-10-CM/PCS coding guidelines, compliance standards, and healthcare documentation practices.

The ideal candidate will have strong expertise in DRG assignment, clinical documentation review, and inpatient coding accuracy, ensuring compliance with all regulatory and organizational standards.

Duties

  • Perform concurrent and retrospective inpatient coding using ICD-10-CM/PCS
  • Assign accurate admit diagnosis, principal diagnosis, and procedures
  • Ensure proper capture of: CC/MCC (Complications/Comorbidities), POA (Present on Admission) indicators, Severity of Illness (SOI) and Risk of Mortality (ROM)
  • Abstract key clinical data elements, including: Discharge disposition, Procedure dates, Attending and consulting physicians
  • Identify when physician queries are needed for clarification
  • Review incomplete documentation and route appropriately
  • Finalize coding after documentation/query resolution
  • Maintain coding quality and productivity standards
  • Serve as a mentor/trainer for coding team members as needed
  • Stay current with evolving coding guidelines and best practices
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

Requirements

  • 3–5 years of inpatient coding experience in an acute care or academic hospital setting
  • Experience working in a remote coding environment preferred
  • Advanced computer and coding system proficiency
  • Preferred experience with: 3M 360 Encompass and Epic EHR systems
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities
  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment
  • Knowledge of healthcare compliance, regulations, and coding standards
  • Team-oriented mindset with a commitment to collaboration

License / Certification

  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management or related field preferred
  • One of the following required certifications: RHIA (Registered Health Information Administrator), RHIT (Registered Health Information Technician), CCS (Certified Coding Specialist), CIC (Certified Inpatient Coder)
