Job Description

The Director of Sterile Processing provides strategic direction, leadership, and oversight for all sterile processing and high-level disinfection operations across the healthcare system. This role is responsible for ensuring the safe, efficient, and compliant sterilization and distribution of surgical instruments and supplies to support perioperative and procedural services. The Director collaborates with surgical services, infection prevention, supply chain, and executive leadership to optimize processes and maintain a state of readiness for current and future needs.

Duties

  • Develop and implement strategic and operational plans for the Sterile Processing Department (SPD), aligned with system goals and surgical service requirements.
  • Lead budgeting, staffing analysis, and cost-effective planning for sterile processing, inventory management, and instrumentation purchasing.
  • Supervise and mentor SPD teams across all sites, ensuring operational excellence and compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Ensure SPD meets all regulatory and accreditation requirements, including Joint Commission, AAMI, OSHA, and other safety programs.
  • Collaborate with infection prevention, perioperative services, and quality teams to implement continuous quality and performance improvement initiatives.
  • Monitor and manage the interface between sterile processing, surgery, materials management, and vendors to ensure availability of instruments and supplies.
  • Maintain monthly staffing schedules and facilitate cross-training and competency development across all SPD roles.
  • Oversee inventory control, instrument acquisition, and vendor relations in collaboration with the Director of Business Operations for Surgical Services.
  • Provide support and training as a subject matter expert on sterilization, high-level disinfection, and reprocessing standards.
  • Ensure staff education and compliance with internal policies and external regulations.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Administrative Director for Surgical Services.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Healthcare, Nursing, Business Administration, or a related field – OR – Fifteen (15) years of documented experience in directly related leadership roles within a procedural or surgical services setting.
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in sterile processing and high-level disinfection operations.
  • Minimum of 1–2 years progressive leadership experience.
  • National certification in sterile processing required (e.g., CRCST or CBSPD).
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, electronic medical records, and instrument tracking systems.

Physical & Mental Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform repetitive tasks such as bending, gripping, and standing for long periods.
